Some of the materials that make up sex toys are best avoided like the plague. In particular, jelly, sometimes also called “gel-like latex”.
The term “jelly” does not refer to a material as such, but to a mixture of plastics that produces soft, translucent sex toys that often look like big sweets. This mixture can contain pretty much anything and everything.
So jelly has a nasty tendency to be prone to unexpected chemical reactions. I’ve already mentioned this. But here is photographic proof, featuring two veteran sex toys, long since retired.
The first of these jelly sex toys is the dildo from our first harness, the Briana, by Doc Johnson. The second is an old rabbit, whose name or brand I can’t track down.
The jelly rabbit: completely melted
Take a close look at this poor creature. Can you see the area in the centre of the photo?
The surface is completely melted. And if you zoom in on the other photos, you’ll see that the gadget has several similar wounds.
Yet this vibrator has not been mistreated. I didn’t leave it against a radiator, I didn’t cook it in the oven… It simply stayed quietly in the company of another sex toy… and these two rascals fought, using chemical reactions.
The jelly dildo: colour change
Let’s compare the appearance of the Briana’s dildo in its youth (official product photo from its brand’s website, on the left) with its current look.
You can spot several things:
- It’s changed colour quite a lot. Well, its shade when we bought it may not have been exactly the same as the one it sports in its official picture. But even allowing that it was more on the green side, it’s still a major change.
- It’s taken on a rather gross shade: a yellowish-brownish green you really don’t want to touch…
- And it’s not visible in the photo, but it smells really strong (it already smelled from the start). And if we had stopped using it, well before it had turned yellowish, it was because it had developed a pungent taste that was frankly not very reassuring.
I keep them in memory of their good and loyal service (or maybe not so loyal after all)… Away from the other sex toys, and each in a separate case, so that my sex toy cupboard doesn’t turn into a little chemist’s workshop.
And you, have you ever run into any issues with jelly sex toys? Let us know in a comment or on the forum.
