Making a silicone dildo (4/6): the mold

We decided to make a silicone dildo, a project just for fun, which we invite you to follow along with. After thinking about the why, gathering the necessary equipment and designing the 3D mold. It is now time for the mold of our future sex toy to penetrate the realm of reality (penetrate, hehe).

Making a silicone dildo: 3D printing the mold

First of all, we 3D printed the mold. Clearly, our printer is becoming an expert in phallic shapes! But this is the first time we’ve tried to make a silicone dildo, and I must admit I’m a little emotional for it.
For the mold, we could perhaps have gone with a shape closer to that of the sex toy to save on the amount of filament. But a rectangular shape had the advantages of making the mold more stable, with less risk of breaking it during demolding, and allowing it to be held closed more easily with clamps.

The printing took a dozen hours. Okay, you don’t have to stand in front of it the whole time it’s printing. But there’s still a small risk that it could screw up at any moment. That’s not the kind of suspense I find very fun. But phew, no incidents to report! It succeeded on the first try.

Making a silicone dildo: smoothing the mold

Before we could make a silicone dildo from this mold, we had to smooth it. This allows us to erase the seam line between the two parts of the mold, as well as the streaks from the printing process. Indeed, a filament 3D printer deposits, one by one, thin layers of molten plastic filament to create the shape it’s given. This results in striated patterns on the surface of the printed object, which are certainly discreet to the naked eye, but for a mold that will be used to make a dildo, it’s better without them.
To do this, we applied Mod Podge, a glue-varnish widely used in arts and crafts, with a brush. First, we applied it to the inside of the dildo’s impression in the two parts of the mold separately. Then, once the Mod Podge was dry, we closed the mold and held it shut with clamps. Finally, we applied a new layer of Mod Podge to the inside of the still-closed mold, paying close attention to the seam between the two halves to fill the groove.

The mold is ready! It is now time to move on to the fateful step, the one that could make everything fail: the molding of the sex toy.
