Making a Silicone Dildo (1/6): Introduction

le

It’s been almost ten years since we started reviewing sex toys, but artisanal dildos still fascinate me just as much. I feel a mix of admiration and jealousy towards those with the superpower to craft sex toys straight from their imagination. So, we decided to try and make a silicone dildo.

The goal is obviously not to compete with our favourite sex toy creators, but simply to have fun by trying it out, and to share this adventure with you.

Admittedly, we weren’t sure we’d end up with anything other than a shapeless blob… But we were still hoping, if possible, to get a truly homemade sex toy (from our very own home)… And one that was neither a cucumber nor a flannel filled with noodles, but was it really necessary to point that out?

Here’s how we went about making our own silicone dildo.

Why make a silicone dildo?

If you also want to try your hand at making a dildo, you should know that it’s going to take quite a bit of time. Before you dive in, it’s worth thinking about your motivations to avoid any potential disappointment.

The wrong reasons

First of all, here is a list of bad reasons. If this is your motivation for making a silicone dildo, you’ll probably be disappointed:

  • To get a free sex toy, or at least a very cheap one: think again. High-quality silicone for making body-safe sex toys is quite expensive. And while the essential tools you’ll need to buy will largely depend on what you already have on hand and how comfortable you are with improvising, you will definitely have to get a few things. The budget will most likely be higher than the price of a dildo, even a nice one.
  • Making a fortune by selling your creations. Whoa, slow down there! More and more creators are getting into artisanal sex toy crafting, and some are doing wonderfully. But it doesn’t happen overnight, and it involves a hell of a lot of work. If you don’t believe me, just ask the woodworker at Idée du Désir what he thinks about it!
  • Making a flawless sex toy with no defects on the first try. It’s possible if you’re very lucky, or if you’re used to doing artistic DIY projects. But when in doubt, to avoid disappointment, just assume that your first creation will have flaws, and that’s okay.

The right reasons to make a silicone dildo

On the other hand, making a silicone dildo will allow you to:

  • Spend some quality time creating and crafting something artistic and erotic, either solo or – even better – with your other half. As a creative pastime, you have to admit it’s a bit more impressive than salt dough or colouring books!
  • Own or gift a silicone sex toy that reflects your desires, or those of your partner. Your friend who’s showing off the diamond ring her boyfriend gave her for Valentine’s Day (seriously, I hope you don’t have friends like that) can go and hide with her ridiculous little crushed carbon rock!
  • Learn a bit more about the various stages of sex toy manufacturing.

Why a silicone dildo?

Various types of sex toys can be handcrafted. Among the possibilities:

A glass sex toy

Handmade glass sex toys are often very beautiful. However, to melt glass, you need very high temperatures. And to have a foundry at home, you need (at least) a garden. No-go for us.

Wood

The idea of a homemade wooden dildo is very tempting. But we wanted to create something a little more elaborate, and my sculpting talent is limited to a few rudimentary geometric shapes… And even then, ouch, my fingers!

A homemade vibrator

Technically, it’s doable. You can buy a small vibrating motor online for not too much, and the same goes for the various other electronic components. But there’s still a big risk of ending up with an underwhelming and disappointing device… Besides, before even thinking about the motor, there’s still the question of the device’s material and look. And we weren’t particularly set on our sex toy being a vibrator.

A silicone sex toy

Silicone is cold-cured, and allows you to create complex shapes fairly easily, provided you have the right mould and a few supplies. What’s more, you can colour it, and combine shades and textures. We wanted to get a heroic fantasy style sex toy, a sort of colourful dragon’s dick with plenty of texture. So, silicone seemed like the ideal raw material.

So, we opted for making a silicone dildo.
