What is sex tech?
The term “sex tech” generally refers to the use of new technologies to enhance sexuality.
It encompasses watching online porn, reading erotic fiction on websites, and visiting erotic webcam platforms, such as Chaturbate. It also includes phone sex, including naughty phone calls and sexting.
The Kinsey Institute’s study on sex tech and porn
The survey was conducted in late 2018. 8,000 Americans answered questions about their use of technology in their sex lives.
Participants who use sex tech report feeling less loneliness and depression than those who don’t. But this is only the case for users who feel an emotional connection towards their virtual partners.
Another observation, hardly surprising, is that people with a positive attitude towards their sexuality feel less lonely and report greater satisfaction.
As the figures show, new technologies already hold a prominent place in Americans’ sex lives. Indeed:
- 50% of participants say they have watched porn clips online.
- 35 % have visited erotic fiction websites.
- 31% have already made a naughty phone call or sent a sext.
- 16% have already visited an erotic webcam platform.
