LELO Sona: Review of the Sonic Clitoral Stimulator

le

I recently told you about the Sona Cruise, the new clitoral stimulator designed by Lelo, and its effectiveness at making all the Womanizer and Satisfyer nearby tremble. I am now going to introduce you to its little brother: the Lelo Sona.

Lelo Sona: review of the sonic clitoral stimulator

Lelo’s Sona looks a lot like the Sona Cruise, except that it is not equipped with Cruise Control technology, which adds a power boost when the sex toy is pressed firmly against the clitoris… and that its price is considerably lower.

On the whole, on one side, it has one less feature. On the other, for now, it costs only €69 (it is a temporary promotion at LELO, it remains to be seen how long it will last) which makes it the cheapest enveloping clitoral stimulator currently on the market. From a manufacturer that only makes luxury sex toys, that is surprising… A pleasant surprise, one worth examining in more detail. The Lelo brand allowed us to do so.

Here is our review of the Lelo Sona clitoral stimulator.

Sex toy packaging

On the packaging side, it remains understated, but with class.

The packaging, identical to that of the Sona Cruise, is a cardboard box with a plastic “window”. Although aesthetic, it remains disposable.

In this box, you will find a satin storage case.

Appearance of the Lelo Sona

Visually, the Sona is in every respect identical to the Sona Cruise.

Its shape is harmonious, all curves, understated and elegant. Small, you hold it in the palm of your hand, and you apply its hollow “beak” to the clitoris. Unlike that of the Womanizer or the Satisfyer, the Sona’s tip is not removable, the sex toy is made from a single, seamless block, except for its back, covered by a metalised plate bearing the brand’s logo.

Like the Sona Cruise, the Lelo Sona is available in three colours, to choose from: pink, cherry red or black. We received the cherry version.

Texture and materials

In this respect, no difference from the Sona Cruise: the Sona’s body is silicone, rigid and firm, but very soft, “peach skin” style, while the plate on its back is ABS plastic, hard and smooth. Two body-safe materials, hypoallergenic and durable.

Power of the Lelo Sona

In terms of power, no surprise, we find the same characteristics as the Sona Cruise.

The Sona is rechargeable and waterproof. Its charging cable, fitted with a proprietary connector on the sex toy side, USB at the other end, plugs into a smartphone charger (not supplied) or a USB port. This cable is compatible with the other Lelo vibrators.

The charging time is 2 hours, for a stated usage time of one hour. That does not seem very long, but you need to bear in mind that it is a sex toy that leads to orgasm very, very quickly: I was able to use the Sona a good number of times before having to recharge it. Note that (if you are planning to use it as soon as possible after unboxing) it does not come charged.

The Sona is fully waterproof: you can use it in the shower and in the bath, but this also allows you to wash it under running water without any risk of damaging it.

Controls

The Sona’s controls are located on its “belly”, within thumb reach.

It has three buttons: a “minus”, a double arrow and a “plus”. The controls being identical to those of the Sona Cruise, I am giving you a quick copy-paste:

  • The “+” allows you to switch on the sex toy and increase its power.
  • The arrows allow you to navigate between the various modes.
  • The “-” allows you to decrease the power, up to switching off the sex toy.

It is intuitive, pleasant to use, you can adjust the power as you wish, and there is no risk of lowering it too abruptly without meaning to (the major drawback of the Satisfyer and the Womanizer 2Go).

Modes of the Lelo Sona

The Sona has eight modes, each available in 8 intensity levels. Again, no difference from its big brother, whose review I will therefore quote:

  • One constant mode,
  • Three pulsation modes (slow, medium, fast),
  • Two sawtooth modes,
  • One wave mode,
  • One random mode.

Noise level

In terms of noise level, the Sona is quieter than its big brother. Given that the Sona Cruise is not that noisy to begin with, I would describe the Sona as rather discreet.

Note that, like that of the Sona Cruise, the sound emitted by the Sona is significantly muffled when it is pressed against the clit, compared to what you hear when it runs “on empty”.

Principle of the Lelo Sona

I will first quote our review of the Sona Cruise, the Sona working in the same way:

Like the Womanizer or the Satisfyer, the Sona has a hollow head, which is penetrated by the clitoris in order to stimulate a larger surface of it.

The Sona’s operating principle differs from that of the Womanizer and the Satisfyer: there is no suction, but sonic pulsations (as with certain toothbrushes!) that surround the clitoris and propagate inside it, deep within.

The Sona and the Sona Cruise.

Up to now, everything is identical, or almost, between the Sona and the Sona Cruise. Now, let us explain the difference between the two sex toys: the Sona Cruise is equipped with a feature called “Cruise Control”, which, in a totally automatic way, reserves part of the motor’s power in order to release this power when the sex toy, pressed firmly against the clitoris, needs a small boost so as not to lose a single ounce of intensity.

The Sona, for its part, does not have this technology. It remains to be seen whether you feel a real difference when using these two clitoral stimulators: the review will tell us.

Effectiveness of the Lelo Sona

Is the Sona effective? Definitely, yes. Terribly effective. The sensations it provides are devilishly intense, and I find it much more stimulating and more powerful than the Womanizer and Satisfyer I have had the opportunity to test.

Like the Sona Cruise, not content with being more brute-force, it is also much more suited to use “in the heat of the moment”: given that the stimulation is not due to suction, there is no risk of an air leak getting in during a clumsy move (and in the middle of making love, it happens easily) cutting the mood by resetting things to zero or almost.

Comparison with the Sona Cruise

Is it absolutely identical to the Sona Cruise? No, fortunately, otherwise it would be the same sex toy, and the price difference between the Sona and the Sona Cruise would be difficult to explain.

In using the Sona, I tried to press hard at times, in order to experience the famous power drop that Cruise Control seeks to avoid: in practice, I was not able to feel the drop in question. By persisting, I eventually managed to hinder the motor’s operation, to the point of temporarily stopping it, by pressing my finger directly into the sex toy’s beak – and indeed, to manage to disturb the Sona Cruise, I had to press even harder. But then: normally, the point of this sex toy is not to put your fingers inside it.

However, in general, the Sona does seem slightly less powerful than the Sona Cruise. Does that stop me from getting a thunderous orgasm in less than a minute with the Sona? Clearly not, especially as I rarely set the Sona Cruise to its maximum power. Would I have noticed this difference if I had not had the two vibrators side by side and if I had not devoted myself to conscientious comparison sessions using one, then the other repeatedly, focusing on the nuances between the two? I am not sure.

Conclusion on the Lelo Sona

The good points:

  • The Sona is terribly effective: as far as sensations go, it is comparable to a Womanizer, but much better, more intense, and less dependent on position.
  • It is a beautiful pleasure object, with its understated look and harmonious shape – unlike the other enveloping vibrators released until then. You can see that Lelo’s style has left its mark.
  • It is made of silicone, waterproof, with intuitive controls: it is a good-quality sex toy, practical and well designed.
  • Its current price: €69, without going so far as to be cheap, it is currently the cheapest enveloping vibrator you can find.

The bad points:

  • Its price when it is no longer on promotion? Currently (and since its release), the Sona is “on sale”, advertised at €69 instead of €149. Is this a trick to encourage buying it as quickly as possible, or will it go back to €149 – and if so, when?
