How to improvise a DIY strap-on? From a quick improvised fix to sewing, through bondage with ropes, the possibilities are numerous. But first, what would one want to make a home-made harness for?
This tutorial is aimed at people who don’t have a penis and who want to wear one, for a single sexual encounter. Whether you’re a lesbian or a fan of pegging, these tips for getting a DIY strap-on might interest you.
Two scenarios. Either you want to penetrate your partner (who shares your desire, of course), but you only have a dildo to hand and no harness. Or, you’re interested in making DIY sex toys, and creating your own harness is a challenge that appeals to you.
The improvised DIY strap-on: with two scarves
A quick tutorial for improvising a harness on the fly, with two scarves.
Materials: two long scarves and a flat-based dildo.
- Tie a simple knot in the middle of the first scarf.
- Pass the dildo through it, and tighten.
- Pass the second scarf through the loop formed by the knot.
- Place the base of the dildo against your pubis, and tie the first scarf around your waist.
- Pass the two ends of the second scarf between your legs, and tie them to the first scarf at hip level.
And there you go! Your improvised strap-on is ready.
The bondage strap-on
A tutorial by Watts The Safeword for making a strap-on from a bondage rope.
Materials: a rope long enough (6 to 9 metres) and a flat-based dildo.
- Fold the rope in half.
- Pass both ends of the rope through the fold together, until the rope forms a small loop. Slide the sex toy into this loop.
- Place the base of the dildo against your pubis. Leave some “slack” in the rope at the loop surrounding the sex toy.
- Pass the rope (its two ends still joined) around your waist.
- Now pass it through the loop surrounding the dildo.
- Then go back under your cheek, then up through the crotch towards the front.
- Pass the rope under the two strands already in place. Hold the loop thus formed, go back down by passing under the strands again.
- Then go back, over the strands this time, to slide your rope through the loop. Tighten by pulling hard.
- Pass the rope back through the crotch to go under the other cheek, and come back towards the front on the other side.
- Slide the rope back through the loop surrounding the dildo.
- Then, as on the other side, pass behind the strands already in place to form a loop.
- Pass the rope through this loop and pull to tighten the knot. The harness is in place!
- Pass the rope back through the crotch (for symmetry) and tie it in the back.
And another technique, a bit more complex, the details of which can be found on the blog of Artemisia FemmeCock.
DIY strap-on: a bit of sewing
The website Oh Joy Sex Toy offers a tutorial for making your own harness fitted with a ring attachment system.
The materials:
- A very form-fitting pair of boxer briefs, well suited to your size.
- A rubber ring, whose diameter is slightly larger than that of the sex toy you plan to use with your harness. You can easily get one from the plumbing section of a DIY store.
- Pins.
- Thread and a needle.
- A pair of scissors.
- Optionally, a small square of soft fabric, if you want to avoid the base of the dildo pressing directly against the skin of the person wearing the harness.
How to sew a DIY strap-on:
- Start by marking where the ring will go, by positioning the dildo the way you’ll want to wear it.
- With the scissors, cut the boxer briefs to form an X at the marked spot.
- Then, place the ring around the X, fold the corners around the ring, and hold it all together with pins.
- Sew so as to enclose the ring in the fabric fold, then reinforce the stitching with stitches all around the circle.
- Cut off the corners that stick out.
- If you wish, sew the square of fabric on the inside of the boxer briefs on three sides, to make a lining that will cover the base of the dildo.

Not bad at all, right?
