LELO Tara review: rotating vibrator for couples

le

The Lelo Tara, along with its sibling, the Ida, are two new-style couples’ vibrators. Indeed, their insertable part performs a rotating motion.

the Lelo Tara, a rotating couples' vibrator

Since August 2013, the Lelo Tiani is banned from sale in the United States and Canada. Users need not worry: this ban is not due to any material issue, but to a patent dispute between the brands LELO and We Vibe, because of the resemblance between their respective couples’ vibrators.

Lelo therefore got around the problem by creating a new type of couples’ vibrators. This is how the Ida and the Tara came into being.

The Kisskiss.ch shop sent us the Lelo Tara for us to test.

Packaging

No surprises with the packaging: everything is really very well presented. A thick, very sturdy cardboard box, with the quality LELO has accustomed us to.

A small satin case is included. You can store the sextoy in it, and even fit its charger in there as well.

Appearance

The Lelo Tara has a strange shape: you’d think it was a cute little alien, like Futurama’s Nibbler. A round, fairly flattened base is attached to a curved shaft.

The Lelo Tara

The round part vibrates, while the curved shaft wiggles, making regular circular movements.

Since the direction of the movements is always the same, the Tara spins on its own when you place it on a flat surface. If you’re looking for a contender to beat the Stronic by Fun Factory in a vibrator race, it won’t cut it.

Texture and materials

The LELO Tara is made of medical-grade silicone (the coloured part) and ABS plastic (the metallic part): body-safe materials that are odourless and durable.

Its base is rigid, while the rotating “branch” is flexible, but firm.

Power

The LELO Tara is rechargeable. The charger is a USB cable with a proprietary connector, which clicks into place on the side of the base. You can either plug it into a computer’s USB port or hijack a smartphone charger. Presumably, you should also be able to swap this cable for the charger from another small Lelo (Gigi 2, Smart Wand Medium, Tiani 2, etc.) if you have one to hand. A charger would have been appreciated: for a sex toy costing over €100, it might not have been too much to ask.

It’s advertised as waterproof. No worries about using it in the shower and washing it with water and soap without having to be careful. But having seen the oxidation marks (with no effect on operation) I’ve noticed over time on the pin of the Smart Wand, which has a similar charging system, I’d be inclined to recommend still letting the Tara air-dry for a little while after each time it goes through water.

The battery seems to last quite a while, whether in terms of usage time while switched on (we didn’t time it, but so far the battery has never let us down during use) or charge retention (after leaving it in the cupboard for a while, it was still charged).

Controls and modes

The LELO Tara has six modes. Only the vibration mode of the flat part changes from one mode to another. Its branch always performs the same rotary motion, at a constant speed. The vibration intensity cannot be varied either.

It is controlled by a button located on the side of the flat part. A long press switches the sex toy on or off, a short press moves to the next mode. The modes loop: after the last one, it returns to the first.

Use

If the LELO Tara is presented as a “vibrator for couples”, in fact it essentially targets heterosexual couples. In practice, it isn’t much use for two men or two women.

For two

The Lelo Tara is worn during penetration.

  • You need to lubricate generously first. Otherwise, it rubs too much.
  • Then, you place the Tara in position. before the penis. In fact, sliding the Lelo Tara in once the penis is in the area isn’t easy. It’s best to keep the sex toy switched off when inserting it. Otherwise, it’s a struggle to start penetration.
  • Once the penis and sex toy are properly in place, you can switch the Tara on. To do this, press the power button, located on the side of the sex toy.

The Lelo Tara and the Lelo Ida

Unlike its more advanced sibling, the Ida (which I will be reviewing soon), the Tara has no remote control. It is therefore best to locate this button carefully before starting. Running a finger over it, you can feel raised bumps on the surface, which helps you find it by touch.

As for the vibrations, they are a bit underpowered to my taste. In themselves, the vibrations seem powerful, but they tend to “get lost” across the entire surface of the Tara’s base.

In addition, this base does not press against my clitoris, but above it… I therefore have to press down on it with my hand for it to get into the right position. Which, let’s admit, is a bit awkward for a sex toy that is supposed to be used “hands-free”.

On the other hand, the rotating axis provides interesting sensations. Wedged between my partner’s penis and the front part of my vagina, it presses right firmly against my G-spot, while continuing to move.

This complementary stimulation is pleasant and very clearly perceptible. It increases the pleasure felt during thrusting and speeds up orgasm significantly.

Solo

Out of curiosity, I tried using the Lelo Tara on its own.

Verdict: the stimulation it provides is too weak to be truly effective by itself. Even when pressing the external part so that it comes to press against my clitoris, the vibrations are not powerful enough for me to orgasm this way. In addition, the rotating part is no longer pressed flat against my G-spot, and the pressure it applies becomes less strong.

And using the Tara with a dildo (the dildo replacing the penis in the toy’s instruction manual), the sensations are nice. I managed to reach an orgasm without too much difficulty that way… But in practice, I prefer simply using a regular dildo and vibrator (a powerful one, if possible); I don’t really see the point of such a variant.

Conclusion on the Lelo Tara

The good points:

  • LELO’s usual quality: safe material, sturdy battery, nice packaging and packaging provided, etc.
  • The concept is original, and quite effective for stimulating the G-spot.

The bad points:

  • The shape of the vibrating base does not suit my anatomy. Without manual assistance, it does not press against my clitoris, which I nevertheless find quite well positioned.
  • The vibrations of that base are too weak to my taste.

Lelo Tara review

My opinion of the Lelo Tara is rather mixed…

I really like the build quality, the look, and the arm that stimulates the G-spot in an original and effective way. But I do not like this large vibrating base that is a bit too weak, whose shape is not really suited to a discreet face-to-face with a clitoris.

I cannot entirely recommend it to you, nor entirely advise you against it.
