VirtualRealPorn is one of the very first (or perhaps the very first) studios producing porn viewable through a virtual reality headset, in order to propose a short interview.
Linda Wells, head of customer support and public relations (she’s notably active on Reddit, where she announces new video releases, answers questions, and takes an interest in users’ suggestions), kindly answered our questions.
Here is her interview (translated by us – Linda and her colleagues being Spanish, we conducted the discussion in English).
ObjetsDePlaisir (OdP): Were you (VirtualRealPorn) already making porn before you got into porn for the Oculus Rift, or did you decide to make porn films with the advent of VR (ed. note: virtual reality)?
VirtualRealPorn: Previously, we made non-porn 3D stereoscopic videos, with another company. That gave us the initial knowledge needed to be able to shoot VR videos.
ObjetsDePlaisir (OdP): How did you decide to start working on VR porn videos (and selling them) – and in particular, for the Oculus Rift, when its final version hasn’t even been released yet? I imagine you probably believe very strongly in the success of VR, and particularly VR in adult entertainment?
VirtualRealPorn: We’ve been fans of virtual reality ever since we watched films like “The Lawnmower Man”, and many others. Last year, the Oculus Rift hit the market and we rushed to buy one in order to have a genuine VR experience.
That’s when we realised that virtual reality would undoubtedly be the future of porn. So we got in touch with one of our friends, a porn actress, and we set up the company. VR opens up new possibilities in porn – enticing and addictive ones. And that’s for everyone: whether you’re a man or a woman, all your fantasies can become “reality”.
OdP: How does the filming process work? Does the actor actually have a camera on their chest?
VirtualRealPorn: We tried that at the beginning, but there was a lot of movement, which made viewers feel sick. Now, we fix the cameras at the height of the male actor’s eyes.
OdP: Is filming a porn film for the Oculus Rift much longer than filming a regular porn film? For example, do you often have to reshoot scenes because of a misplaced camera or something else?
VirtualRealPorn: Absolutely, yes. Setting up the cameras is a complex task, and you have to take into account many parameters of the equipment to work properly. Sometimes, it’s necessary to reshoot certain scenes, and for many different reasons.
OdP: How is the atmosphere different on set (compared to filming a regular “2D” porn film)?
VirtualRealPorn: There’s always a great working environment on set – we like to be constantly attentive to the needs of the actresses and actors, and you can see it in the final product.
OdP: Are there technical constraints that prevent you from shooting certain types of scenes?
VirtualRealPorn: There are many rules we have to follow in order to create a comfortable immersion in the videos, in terms of pre-production planning, filming, and post-production. Most of the traditional rules of adult film shooting don’t apply to VR. Users prefer completely static shots, for example, and that’s just one of the many rules we have to follow (and we’re discovering more and more with each video we create).
OdP: Generally, how do actors and actresses react when you offer them the chance to be in a 3D film?
VirtualRealPorn: They really like the idea!
OdP: Are you planning to make 3D porn for the Oculus that would also be compatible with other devices like the VStroker?
VirtualRealPorn: Yes, we plan to integrate teledildonics with our own video player. It would be a big leap in the immersion of our products.
OdP: Are you considering making more targeted types of porn videos (like BDSM or fetish videos, etc.) or ones involving more than two participants (gang bang videos, for example)?
VirtualRealPorn: We’re very attentive to our users’ wishes, and, without a doubt, we’ll create that kind of video if they ask us to.
OdP: You made a video in which the viewer finds themselves in the shoes of an actress who squirts, thus experiencing female ejaculation in the first person. What would you say to making a video where the person watching finds themselves performing a virtual blowjob?
VirtualRealPorn: We’re always experimenting with new ways to shoot scenes, and that one is very difficult to film, but we’ll find a way to do it.
OdP: How do you see the future? Do you think VR porn is going to grow quickly? Any particular projects?
VirtualRealPorn: We’re going to keep improving our products, in order to maximise immersion and interactivity, and we’re going to try to explore all porn categories in order to satisfy all tastes.
It’s hard to predict how VR porn is going to grow… We’re totally focused on our products and on our users’ needs, and we never stop testing all the new technologies available.
OdP: Do you think we’ll see this type of 3D video become common enough for immersive “home-made” 3D amateur porn to become frequent within a few years (the way phone-shot porn is currently)?
VirtualRealPorn: We think it won’t be a fiasco like current standard 3D stereoscopic videos. VR porn will certainly become an ordinary way for everyone to watch porn.
