How to choose a strap-on for beginners?

le

How do you choose a strap-on dildo? We’re often asked for advice about this. There are many harness models, with various attachment systems, and even more dildos compatible with them.

How do you find your way around harnesses and dildos, depending on your budget?

Choosing a strap-on: harness and dildo

Choosing a strap-on dildo: attachment systems

You often hear about Vac-U-Lock strap-ons. It’s an attachment system patented by Doc Johnson. It’s therefore mainly compatible with dildos from this brand, but other sex toys, such as RealDoll’s RealCock 2 DTF, are also designed to fit it.

At the pubic area, the harness has a plastic rod onto which the dildo, with a hole designed for this purpose, is fitted.

I’d tend to advise against Vac-U-Lock harnesses. For one thing, they don’t hold the sex toy very well, and it tends to point downwards. For another, these harnesses are only compatible with a few sex toys, which will greatly limit your choice of dildo to go with it.

If you want to choose a strap-on harness that doesn’t restrict you to a particular brand of sex toy, it’s better to go for a harness with a ring attachment system, or “O-Ring”. This will be compatible with most dildos with a wide, flat base. There are many different types: some have straps, elastic or otherwise, while others look more like underwear.

And if you fall for a dildo that requires a Vac-U-Lock fitting after all, like the RealCock 2 DTF, there’s nothing to stop you fitting your O-Ring harness with an adapter.

The best of the best in strap-on harnesses

When it comes to harnesses, the best of the best comes from the SpareParts Hardwear brand. Mind you, I’m not saying these are the only harnesses worth a look. There are lots of great alternatives that are better suited to smaller budgets. But we’ll talk about those later in this article.

In any case, SpareParts harnesses are really great. They all have a ring attachment system, or “O-ring”. It’s the most reliable attachment system. Unlike “Vac-U-Lock”, patented by Doc Johnson and able to hold only sex toys from the same brand, it’s compatible with any dildo with a flat, flared base.

They hold the dildo beautifully, with its base held tightly against the body for good control, and they’re very comfortable.

  • The “comfort” version: the Joque, or the Deuce for double penetration.
  • The sexy version: the Sasha or the Bella, with lace.
  • The tomboy version: the Tomboi, which looks like comfortable, simple boxer shorts.

When it comes to dildos, you’re spoilt for choice. Just make sure the sex toy you choose has a wide, flat base.

If you’re after realistic sex toys, you’ll probably love the Vixen Mustang. Otherwise, at Tantus, you’ll find a whole host of wonders that can fit in a harness.

Sure, SpareParts harnesses are great, but you can expect to pay at least a hundred euros for one. And that’s not including the price of the dildo to go with it, especially if you prefer a realistic toy. Vixen Creations sex toys also cost at least a hundred euros.

Choosing a strap-on dildo on a small budget

So, what harness should you choose if you want to get started with strap-on play on a small budget?

There are lots of comfortable, practical O-ring harness briefs. They may not hold quite as perfectly as SpareParts harnesses, but they’re still perfectly decent and look good. These include the Lovehoney harnesses, which cost just over thirty euros, and those from the Rodeoh brand, which cost around sixty euros.

Whatever you do, go for silicone when it comes to the dildo. That way, you’ll avoid any problems with plastic smells, allergies or toxicity. Among the flat-based dildos that fit well in a harness, there are some great low-cost options in Fun Factory’s Stubs range, including The Boss Stub and Tiger.

Alternatively, in a different style, the Tantus Bend Over, which costs around 90 euros, is a complete kit with a harness and two dildos in different sizes.

The harness in this kit is a little less comfortable than the other models we’ve talked about, but it holds the dildo very securely and is sturdy. And having two sex toys in different sizes gives you more ways to explore.
